The Origins of Easter,Can We Handle The Truth?

As with almost all "Christian" holidays, Easter has been secularized and commercialized. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication.

Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival.

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner.

It would have been suicide for the very early Christian converts to celebrate their holy days with observances that did not coincide with celebrations that already existed. To save lives, the missionaries cleverly decided to spread their religious message slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner.

As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian celebration as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter.

The Date of Easter:

Prior to A.D. 325, Easter was variously celebrated on different days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In that year, the Council of Nicaea was convened by emperor Constantine. It issued the Easter Rule which states that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. However, a caveat must be introduced here. The "full moon" in the rule is the ecclesiastical full moon, which is defined as the fourteenth day of a tabular lunation, where day 1 corresponds to the ecclesiastical New Moon. It does not always occur on the same date as the astronomical full moon. The ecclesiastical "vernal equinox" is always on March 21. Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25.

The Lenten Season:

Lent is the forty-six day period just prior to Easter Sunday. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is a celebration, sometimes called "Carnival," practiced around the world, on the Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. It was designed as a way to "get it all out" before the sacrifices of Lent began. New Orleans is the focal point of Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S. Read about the religious meanings of the Lenten Season.

The Cross:

The Cross is the symbol of the Crucifixion, as opposed to the Resurrection. However, at the Council of Nicaea, in A.D. 325, Constantine decreed that the Cross was the official symbol of Christianity. The Cross is not only a symbol of Easter, but it is more widely used, especially by the Catholic Church, as a year-round symbol of their faith.

The Easter Bunny:

The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol originated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.

The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time.

The Easter Egg:

As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.

From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.

Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy.

The Kanye West Foundation

It was started out of a sense of moral and social responsibility to help children by utilizing my success and celebrity to help poor children.

The data is undeniable that America’s youth are failing academically. As a direct result, a lot of youth in poor communities drop out because they don’t have access to educational programs that address their unique interests. Children that graduate from high school are better prepared to become positive contributors to the world in which we all have to live.

There is no contribution too small. We all have something to give whether its money, resources, talents or time. Contributions can be made directly at the Kanye West Foundation website at www.kanyewestfoundation.org.

We are all busy and have lots of excuses for why we don’t find time to give back. I make time because either we are part of the problem or a part of the solution.

Now, by a show of hands how many more will go all out for our children if given the chance... I will!

Blogger freed after record contempt stint

Video blogger Joshua Wolf, who spent a record-setting stint behind bars for refusing to turn over his footage of a chaotic 2005 street protest, walked out of prison after cutting a deal with prosecutors.

Wolf, 24, said Tuesday he was looking forward to "pizza and a beer" after having spent 226 days in prison -- more than any journalist who's refused to testify.

Under the deal with prosecutors, Wolf agreed to turn over the uncut video, which he also posted on his Web site Tuesday. But he refused to testify before the grand jury about the events at the protest or the identities of participants.

"I will not under any circumstances testify before a grand jury," Wolf said.

His prison time surpassed the previous record set by Vanessa Leggett, a Houston-based freelancer who served 168 days in 2001 and 2002 for declining to reveal unpublished material about a murder case.

Wolf had been found in contempt for refusing to obey a subpoena to turn over his video from a July 2005 protest during the G-8 economic summit where anarchists were suspected of vandalizing a San Francisco police car. One city officer was struck during the rally and his skull was fractured.

Wolf, a freelancer, sold some footage to San Francisco television stations and posted it on his Web site, but refused to turn over unpublished material.

The footage Wolf posted online Tuesday does not capture the alleged crimes authorities are investigating, defense lawyer David Greene said. Wolf's lawyers had argued that the First Amendment gave him the right to refuse the subpoena to turn over the rest of his tape.

"Now that the fences of the law and the tradition that has protected the press are broken down, the people are the victims. The First Amendment, as I read it, was designed precisely to prevent that tragedy," Wolf said in prepared statement he read Tuesday on the steps of San Francisco City Hall.

California's shield law allows reporters to keep sources and unpublished material secret. But there is no federal shield law protecting reporters from federal investigations.

The National Writer's Union, which represents freelance writers, said in a statement that Wolf should never have been jailed.

"The abuses visited on Josh and other journalists are part of an effort by governments at all levels to control the volume, flow and content of the information that reaches the public," the union said.

Those are the loves that will never die. Those loves haunt the very dept of memory until the light on this small world burn away.

Gator Championship: Florida 84, Ohio State 75

Florida juniors Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer all could have declared for the NBA draft after the Gators won their first ever national championship last year.

They all would have been first-round picks. But they opted to come back for one last hurrah and wound up dancing on the podium here Monday after defeating Ohio State, 84-75, at the Georgia Dome to become the first team since Duke in 1992 to repeat. Maybe that is why they are destined to be labeled one of the great teams in modern history.

"You can argue it,'' Brewer said, "but you got to put us up there. Some guy was talking on TV, a little motivation, saying we're not even in the top five teams to play the game if we win the national championship. He might want to do his research. The numbers don't lie, you know, back to back.''

Brewer will always have a soft spot in the hearts of Gator fans. Unlike Noah, whose father played pro tennis; or Horford, whose father played in the NBA, Brewer's 62-year old father Pee Wee worked on a Tobacco farm in Portland, Tenn. before he suffered heart problems in 1999 and then contracted diabetes. Doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee in November, so there were serious financial considerations since his mother has to pay all the bills on her teacher's salary.

But his father helped him make his decision when he called and told him he didn't have to go to the NBA for his family. "My mom and dad both said it was about being happy and what's best for you,'' Brewer said. "Don't let other people push you out the door or try to make you stay. If you're happy with your teammates and where you're at, then come back. If you want to go, go.

"I'm confident I made the right decision. Me and my teammates are all like family. Joakim and I have been together from Day 1. He's like my brother.''

Florida really has been a band of brothers, a close-knit group that reflects the genuine friendship of their coach Billy Donovan.

Brewer was the deserving recipient of the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award after scoring 19 points and shutting down UCLA's All American guard Aaron Afflalo in the semis, then scoring 13 points, grabbing eight rebounds and holding Ohio State's best perimeter shooter Ron Lewis without a three-point field goal in the final.

Brewer was on fire at the start of the game, making three of five 3s and scoring 11 points as the Gators raced to a 40-29 lead at the end of the first half.

"I felt we had to go out and be aggressive because if we just let them play with us, hang around, let them play with us, we may have a chance to get beat," Brewer said. "So we all went out there and we were really aggressive. My teammates were finding me in open spots and I had to knock them down.''

The Gators came up with a workable game plan, opting to single cover Ohio State's 7-foot freshman Greg Oden in the post and guard the 3-point line. Oden went off for 25 points and 12 rebounds in what is probably his last college game, but the Buckeyes shot just 4-for-23 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Oden will most likely declare for the NBA draft, where he should be the first player selected. But Brewer had this piece of advice for him:

"I'd tell him, 'Once you leave college, you can't be a kid anymore,''' Brewer said. "You're going into big business and it's all business. You're having fun right now, so enjoy college.''

Brewer certainly looked like he was enjoying the celebration as streamers fell from the rafters at the end of the game and CBS cued up "One Shining Moment.'' If this was the swan song for he, Noah and Horford, they wanted to embrace it.

"It's unreal,'' Brewer said. "One shining moment. It almost makes you want to cry. Second time I got to watch it, our team got to watch it, just to see what goes into people playing in the NCAA Tournament. That's why (you've got to) love college basketball, all the guys diving on the floor, everybody playing hard as they can play just to be in this moment where we are right now.''

The question now is: Does the trio of Gator juniors love college basketball enough to try for a three-peat?

Jellyfish have human-like eyes

A set of special eyes, similar to our own, keeps venomous box jellyfish from bumping into obstacles as they swim across the ocean floor, a new study finds.

Unlike normal jellyfish, which drift in the ocean current, box jellyfish are active swimmers that can rapidly make 180-degree turns and deftly dart between objects. Scientists suspect that box jellyfish are such agile because one set of their 24 eyes detects objects that get in their way.

“Behavior-wise, they’re very different from normal jellyfish,” said study leader Anders Garm of Lund University in Sweden.

The eyes of box jellyfish are located on cup-like structures that hang from their cube-shaped bodies.

Whereas we have one set of multi-purpose eyes that sense color, size, shape and light intensity, box jellyfish have four different types of special-purpose eyes. The most primitive set detects only light levels, but one set of eyes is more sophisticated and can detect the color and size of objects.

One of these eyes is located on the top of the cup-like structure, the other on the bottom, which provides the jellyfish with “an extreme fish-eye view, so it’s watching almost the entire underwater world,” said Garm, who will present his research at the Society of Experimental Biology’s annual meeting, in Scotland.

To test if these eyes helped the jellyfish avoid obstacles, Garm put the jellyfish in a flow chamber and inserted different objects to see if the jellyfish could avoid them. While the jellyfish could avoid objects of different colors and shapes, transparent objects proved more difficult.

“They can’t respond to the see-through ones,” Garm said.

Because jellyfish belong to one of the first groups of animals to evolve eyes (the phylum Cnidaria), Garm said, understanding how their eyes operate will show scientists what eyes were like early in evolutionary time.
