Spider-Man 3: A dazzling kick-off to the summer '07 movie season.

Left dangling for the past three years, arachnophiles everywhere finally have cause to celebrate.

The biggest (with a production budget due north of $250 million) and longest (clocking in at 139 minutes) and quite possibly the capper of a trilogy featuring the current talent lineup, "Spider-Man 3" has done it again.

Certain to please the geek squad by remaining ever true to its comic book roots while retaining that satisfying emotional core that has registered with equal numbers of female fans, "Spider-Man 3" has all its demographic bases covered.

And while the picture as a contained whole might fall an itsy-bitsy short of the personal best set by Sam Raimi's 2004 edition, the wow factor works overtime with state-of-the-art effects sequences that often are as beautiful as they are astonishing.Having already received its world premiere last week in Tokyo in a nod to piracy concerns, "Spider-Man 3" is slated to arrive in a good portion of the globe ahead of its May 4 North American bow. "Spidey's" already impressive tracking numbers should be off the hook by the time it hits theaters here.

Factor in those additional Imax screens, and the Columbia Pictures blockbuster should spin a worldwide web that should build substantially on the $1.6 billion already brought in by the first two installments.

Fittingly for a Marvel comic book character who seems to be even more tormented by issues of duality than his superpowered colleagues, "Spider-Man 3" introduces not one but two formidable foes determined to take the web-slinger down.

First there's Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church), an escaped con who becomes better known as Sandman after his DNA bonds with sand particles when he inadvertently gets caught in the middle of a molecular fusion experiment.

Then there's Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), Peter Parker's photo-snapping rival at the Daily Bugle who is transformed into the extremely nasty Venom after being enveloped in that black goop from another galaxy that temporarily brings out Parker's own darker impulses.

That's in addition to the love-hate relationship Pete already has with Harry Osborn (James Franco), who is very much in the latter mode at the beginning of the picture, determined to make Parker pay for his father's (aka Green Goblin) death.

But Parker also is preoccupied with his relationship with longtime girlfriend Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). Things have hit a bit of a rocky patch as Mary Jane's acting career suffers a serious setback at the same time when Spider-Man's public adoration is at an all-time high.

Further complicating his marriage-proposal plans is the appearance of Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard), the daughter of a police captain (James Cromwell) and a classmate of Parker's (not to mention the object of Eddie Brock's desires) whose public crush on Spider-Man has been duly noted by Mary Jane.

Tis a very tangled web of relationships, indeed, and things only become more enmeshed when Marko is found to be implicated in the death of Parker's Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson).

Keeping them all neatly interconnected is the ambitious script by Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi along with Alvin Sargent, who also helped elevate "Spider-Man 2."

While there are times the film's underlying theme of the power of forgiveness isn't always quite as subtle as it could be, it nevertheless serves as an effective anchor for the performers.

That aforementioned sinister substance that turns Spidey's suit a sleek, inky black also affords Tobey Maguire the opportunity to have a little fun getting in touch with his dark side, even when the bad boy makeover -- with his slicked-forward bangs and finger-popping attitude -- reminds one of a "Reefer Madness" fiend or, say, Robert Downey Jr. in "Less Than Zero."

At times, it also feels as if Raimi -- his Spidey senses tingling that this could well be his last stint as web master -- is determined to make sure he gets everything in. The result, aside from a running time that comes in 12 minutes longer than the previous edition, isn't always as cleanly executed as it might have been, especially toward the ending.

But there's plenty to enjoy here, from all the usual suspects, plus nicely conflicted performances by Church and Grace (ironic names for portrayers of bad guys, huh?).

Not to be outdone are those visual effects, which have again grown in leaps and bounds.

Entrusted with the new technologies, visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk and Sony Pictures Imageworks deliver big time here. On more than one occasion, those breathtaking sequences -- from Flint Marko's molecular deconstruction/Sandman's subsequent reconstruction to that final face-off among Spider-Man, Sandman, Venom and Osborn -- are deservedly met with bursts of spontaneous audience applause, which is no mean feat when balancing tubs of popcorn and supersize beverages.

Rounding out those money-well-spent production values is Bill Pope's vibrant cinematography, Bob Murawski's propulsive editing and James Acheson's dynamic costume design.

All three worked on "Spider-Man 2," as did production designer Neil Spisak, who this time also is joined by J. Michael Riva ("The Pursuit of Happyness"), and "Spider-Man 2" composer Christopher Young, who seamlessly incorporates Danny Elfman's original themes.

History of Mother's Day

Motherhood has always been celebrated. In prehistoric tribes the mother Goddess was worshiped as the creator of life. Female goddess figures are found in many archeological digs. In Egypt, Isis was the Queen of Heaven who ruled over all matters concerning mothering. In ancient Greece Rhea was revered as the mother goddess and in ancient Rome it was Hera, the jealous wife of Zeus, and another mother goddess known as Cybele. Most mothering festivals in early history were in the springtime to celebrate the rebirth of the land and the beginning of the most fertile time of the year. These festivities honored the goddess in all women.

The modern version of Mother's Day with families bringing flowers and gifts to their moms can be traced back to seventeenth century England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday in Lent...a special day when all the strict rules about fasting and penance were put aside. Older children who were away from home learning a trade or working as servants were allowed to return home for Mothering Sunday. The family gathered for a mid-Lenten feast with Mother as the special guest. Along with a rare visit from her children, mothers were given treats of cakes and wildflower bouquets. While ‘Mothering Sunday’ is still celebrated, most now know it as Mother’s Day.

The history of Mother's Day in the rest of the world is a bit different. In the USA, the early English settlers often disapproved of the more secular holidays and the Mothering Sunday tradition never really took hold. Early attempts to have a day to honor mother's were mixed with woman's suffrage and peace movements and were not very popular.

Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested the idea of an International Mother's day to celebrate peace and motherhood in 1872. There were many other women who were active with local groups holding annual Mother's Day remembrances, but most were more religious gatherings and not the holiday that we know today.

One of the women, who was working on establishing Mother's Day as a national celebration was the mother of Anna Jarvis. Mrs. Jarvis held an annual gathering, Mother’s Friendship Day, to heal the pain of the Civil War. After she died in 1905, Anna campaigned for the establishment of an official Mother’s Day to commemorate her mother.

"Miss Anna Jarvis was as good as her word. She devoted her entire life to the struggle to have Mother's Day declared a national holiday. In the spring of 1908, Anna wrote to the Superintendent of Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, where her mother had taught Sunday School classes for over 20 years. She requested that a Mother's Day service be held in honor of her mother. Thus, the first official Mother's Day celebration was held at Andrew's Methodist Church on May 10, 1908, with 407 persons in attendance. Anna Jarvis sent 500 white carnations to the church in Grafton. One was to be worn by each son and daughter and two by each mother in attendance. Another service was held in Philadelphia later that afternoon where Anna resided with her brother. Anna had requested that the first official service be held in Grafton, where the Jarvis family had lived so much of their lives and where her mother had served for so long as a teacher and public servant." ( Mother's Day Shrine.org)

Anna Jarvis' campaign is the reason we have a formal holiday. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

It didn't take very long for Mother's Day to change from a semi-religious occasion of prayers for peace and appreciation of the work and love of mothers around the world to a gifts, flowers, candy and dining out extravaganza. Anna Jarvis was actually arrested at a Mother’s Day festival while trying to stop women from selling flowers. Jarvis said “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment not profit.”

Mother's Day may not have turned out to be the holiday that Julia Ward Howe, Anna Jarvis and countless other women around the world imagined, but it is a celebration of mothers...dedicated to honoring the women who give so much to their families without asking for anything in return. Perhaps every day should be Mother's Day, but most families are too busy with everyday business to say thank you for every meal or every good night kiss.

Once every year, the world stops being busy and says thank you. Flowers, cards and gifts are just the outward signs. What mothers love most is the fact that their families really do notice all that they do and for one day every mom is queen for a day...

Happy Mother's Day!

A Jovian Photo Feast of Jupiture

New images beamed back by a NASA spacecraft that flew by Jupiter earlier this year are giving scientists their most detailed glimpse yet of the gas giant and its moons.

On Feb. 28, New Horizons passed within 1.4 million miles (2.3 million kilometers) of Jupiter as part of a slingshot maneuver to give it a speed boost as it races toward its main target Pluto. During the move, the spacecraft snapped hundreds of images of the Jupiter system.

Some of those images, unveiled Tuesday during a NASA news conference, reveal never-before-seen features of the planet and its moons. New Horizon's principal investigator, Alan Stern, said New Horizon's Jupiter flyby was "successful beyond our wildest dreams."

"This is the eighth mission to Jupiter, and it gives us a chance for the first time to take these modern instruments in close where Cassini couldn't go and with the bandwidth that Galileo couldn't deliver to really unveil new views of the system," Stern said.

Among the new images is one showing Jupiter's high-altitude clouds and a haze at the planet's south pole probably formed by charged particles transported there during one of the gas giant's auroras.

Another image provides the best picture yet of Jupiter's charcoal-black rings. "Most people didn't realize Jupiter had rings. When you say rings, most people think of Saturn," said New Horizons scientist Jeff Moore of NASA's Ames Research Center. "By incredible good luck, we happened to be at the right trajectory with the right instruments to study these."

There are images capturing several simultaneous volcanic eruptions on Jupiter's moon Io and one of a volcanic plume jettisoned up 200 miles (320 kilometers) above the moon's surface. Another picture shows in stunning detail Jupiter's Little Red Spot, a new storm system that is smaller than the planet's famous Great Red Spot.

"It's sort of reminiscent of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' painting," said Hal Weaver, a New Horizons project scientist at John Hopkins University. "But this is the real deal. It's not in somebody's imagination."

Stern's favorite image shows Jupiter's icy moon Europa rising above the Jupiter cloud tops. The shot is one of many the spacecraft was programmed to take for artistic, rather than scientific, purposes.

"I'd say if you haven't been to Jupiter yet, you have now, and New Horizon has taken you there," Stern said.

More to come
New Horizon's images are providing scientists with a bounty of new data to analyze, and there is still more to come. "We are only about 70 percent of the way through the playback," said John Spencer, New Horizon's deputy lead researcher. "The data is still coming down every morning. It's going to be kind of sad in a few weeks when we finally stop getting this daily fix of new exciting stuff and we have to actually sit down and write up our papers."

The Jupiter flyby came just 13 months after New Horizon's launch, and was a dress rehearsal for its rendezvous with Pluto in 2015. The instruments performed so well that the team will veer from its original plan and prepare for the Pluto mission early.

"We've really learned how to drive this spacecraft," Stern said. "The people that did the Jupiter encounter are now charged in the coming year and a half with designing and writing all the code for the spacecraft to execute during its Pluto encounter."

The original plan was to put New Horizon into hibernation for several years after the Jupiter flyby before waking it again to prepare for Pluto. "We've instead decided that the team is so expert now and they're at the peak of their performance that we're going to be designing and writing all the code in '07 and '08 and doing our first rehearsal of the Pluto encounter in 2009," Stern said.

My Must See Movie For the Month of May

In the upcoming movie "28 Weeks Later", in theaters May 11, 2007 the devastating rage virus that annihilated the British Isles mysteriously resurfaces in Goya Award-winning director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's sequel to the Danny Boyle directed horror hit that terrified audiences worldwide by offering a breathless new take on the familiar zombie mythos. Six months has passed since the rage virus caused British residents to indiscriminately murder and destroy everything in their paths, and now the U.S. military has declared victory in the war against the rapidly-spreading infection. As the reconstruction process gets underway and the first wave of refugees return to British shores, a family separated by the devastation is happily reunited. The joy of seeing their family together again is short-lived, however, when it becomes obvious that one of them harbors a horrific secret. Now, just as society struggles to sort through the rubble and rebuild London from the ground up, the virus that nearly destroyed a nation strikes back with a vengeance. Jeremy Renner, Robery Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Harold Perrineau, Jr., and Catherine McCormack star in a frightful sequel that highlights the dangers of declaring victory in the calm before the storm.

Britney's Night Out With Day

Have Britney Spears and Howie Day moved from the tennis court to a full-court press? Just weeks after pics surfaced of the pair practicing their racquet skills while holed up at the Promises Rehab Center in Malibu, they were snapped making the scene together in Los Angeles Saturday night. Lensmen at photo agency X17 followed the perma-hatted and insta-toned mommy of two as she and the semi-famous Day, whose arrest record makes Kevin Federline look like a catch by comparison (he was picked up by police in 2004 and 2005), went to dinner and hit hotspot Teddy's before supposedly heading back to her place. Doing Abdominal Crunches The Right Way

Abdominal crunches can help you keep your core muscles strong - but only if you know the right way to do them. Fitness expert Jonathan Cane explains how to get the most out of your crunches.

Here’s how to get the most out of your abdominal crunches.....

By slowing the movement down and eliminating the momentum and eliminating all the flailing of the arms, it's making the exercise harder to do and focusing all the energy on the muscles.

Eliminate the space between your lower back and the floor. That's protecting your lower back and that's always going to be the starting point for any abdominal exercise.

You're going to slow everything down and keep the elbows nice and wide, keep space, thinking as if he has a tennis ball between your chin and your chest and then your going to come up a little bit higher than you usally do, all in a slow, controlled movement. Three seconds up, pausing at the top, three seconds down and, again, you see the elbows stay nice and wide, space between the chin and the chest as a result you will got daylight under you shoulder blades at the top of the range of motion "the shadow of your back will show on the floor".

Gone With the Martian Wind

Mars is a very windy place?so windy, in fact, that bright, oxidized martian soil is being scoured away by martian winds and dust devils to reveal darker, sub-surface soil with the end result of making the whole planet warmer. Mars is experiencing its own brand of climate change. Is this related to planet earth?s greenhouse gas driven climate change? No. Is understanding the process important for our understanding of how planets evolve and change over time? Absolutely.

In early April of this year, a young Carl Sagan Center Principal Investigator named Lori Fenton, together with her colleagues at? NASA Ames Research Center and the USGS in Flagstaff Arizona, published an article in the journal Nature revealing the phenomenon of the rise in the martian global temperature over the past 20 years. The rise, less that 2? for both surface and air temperature, is still significant from a geologic perspective.

The mechanism for the warming is due to the change in brightness, or ?albedo? of the martian surface. The light, bright, oxidized martian surface soil reflects a significant amount of solar radiation, tending to keep Mars cool, just as wearing white on a hot summer?s day is cooling. The darker, more absorbent subsurface soil, revealed after a windstorm or dust devil passes through on Mars, retains more heat, just as wearing dark clothes will on that same hot summer?s day here on earth. The result of more exposed dark soil is that the temperature of Mars has gone up between one and two degrees over the last two decades.

Such a change is very intriguing and has never before been seen on any planet. The martian atmosphere is significantly thinner than that on earth. It?s similar to what is found on our home planet at about 100,000 feet. Even so, the winds that result from the movement of even such a thin atmosphere are clearly strong enough to have a profound impact on the planet. Comparative planetologists and climate modelers will be monitoring Mars closely for the next 20 years and beyond, trying to discern if there is some sort of pattern to the changes and if the trend seems to be continuing. The truth is, we have only begun to monitor and record such data and are just beginning to track changes as they unfold.

Mars dust devils have been in space news before now. In fact, the Mars Rover twins, Spirit and Opportunity, owe their lives to the quixotic martian winds. Gusts of wind and dust devils pass over the solar arrays on the intrepid robotic explorers just often enough to scour away the ubiquitous martian dust from the surface of their mission prolonging solar arrays and sweep away the dust build-up, allowing the 4 year old batteries to recharge. This helpful process was completely unforeseen.

With new high resolution instruments on Mars, thanks to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and advanced landers and rovers in the pipeline with Phoenix Scout and Mars Science Laboratory due to launch in the next few years, we will continue to get information on martian winds and weather and discover just what else is gone with the wind.

Is Your Child A Bully?

No one wants to hear that their child is a bully. But if complaints are building up from children, teachers or other parents that your son or daughter is bullying other kids, it's a good idea to listen.

Bullying has gained media attention recently because of the shootings at Virginia Tech. The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, was bullied in high school, according to some of his former classmates. Many victims of bullying later become bullies themselves, experts say.

Children and teens who are bullies are more likely to become criminals than other children. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, boys who were identified as bullies in middle school were four times as likely as their non-bullying peers to have more than one criminal conviction by the time they're 24.

And it's not just a boy problem. Girls bully other girls, but in different ways. Although these methods may not be physical, emotionally they are just as damaging, experts say. Cyber-bullying—harassing and insulting someone through email, Web sites, text messages or instant messaging—frequently happens with girls as the bully and the bullied. (Boys can be cyber-bullied too.)

Climate Catastrophes In The Solar System

Earth sits between two worlds that have been devastated by climate catastrophes. In the effort to combat global warming, our neighbours can provide valuable insights into the way climate catastrophes affect planets.

From what scientists know now, it is possible that Venus and Mars started out a lot like Earth. At some point in time, each planet followed a path that changed its climate. The transition was from Earth-like to either a cloudy inferno (Venus) or a frigid desert (Mars). Data from Venus Express and Mars express is now helping scientists determine if, when and why each planet passed the point of no-return.

House of Dereon Wins In Court

Beyonce Knowles has won a legal battle against a former House Of Dereon business associate, after his $1.5 million lawsuit accusing the singer of shortchanging him was thrown out of court.

Greg Walker of Icon Entertainment was suing the "Irreplaceable" star for reportedly cutting him out of a $15 million fashion deal he had arranged with Knowles and her mother, Tina, in 2003.

Walker claimed Knowles failed to pay him the $25,000 for his services, which led to the creation of the singer's clothing line, House of Dereon, in 2004, reports the New York Daily News.

But Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Herman Kahn ruled that Walker never had a signed contract with Knowles and House Of Dereon, and therefore lacked a valid argument.

House of Dereon clothing as well as Beyonce's junior line Dereon have become supremely demanded by the Urban and Hip Hop fashion crowd. SoJones.com's Celebrity Lines Directory listing, an official source for the clothing brand's news and on-line popularity statistics, cited the brand already has become the second most searched for Women's Hip Hop clothing brand.

In more recent news, rumors are spreading that Beyonce is planning to leave her Sony Records home. The industry is buzzing after talks about Jay-Z and Beyonce leaving their labels to form a 'super label' leaked into the public. However, many are skeptical this is true, and professionals say if this is true, it's just a way to make Sony put up some very large numbers for their roster-star, Beyonce "B-Day" Knowles.

Third 'Spider-Man' Is Priciest Movie Ever Made

"Spider-Man 3" is sure to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in box office sales, but it's another number that has become the talk of the industry -- the amount spent on making the third installment.

According to Radar Online , when marketing and promotion costs factored in with filming costs, it cost $500 million to produce "Spider-Man 3," which opens on May 4. Some insiders say the film alone cost upwards of $350 million, which, if true, would set the record for most expensive film, an honor previously held by 1963's "Cleopatra," which would have cost $290 million if it were produced today.

Sony Pictures, the studio behind the "Spider-Man" movies, says rumors of the total cost are a ""complete fabrication," and put the production tally at $270 million. Laura Ziskin, a "Spider-Man 3" producer told Radar she refuses give the exact amount because it "makes me choke," but affirms that it was a "super-expensive movie — the most expensive film we've ever made. But there's no way you can get to $300 million."

Even with its titanic costs, there could be little risk involved for "Spider-Man 3". The first two movies in the series have grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide, with the third expected to perform just as well as the others.

"'Spider-Man' is Sony's 'Star Wars,'" a former executive told Radar. "It's the one franchise that's done business for them."

That a look and soak in some personal insight about "Spider-Man 3".

Lakers, Jazz Earn First Playoff Wins

Kobe, Kwame lead Lakers to Game 3 victory. At that stage, with the home crowd booing, Lakers star Kobe Bryant figured there were two directions his team could take.
"You can put your tail between your legs or come back fighting," he said.

Bryant scored 15 of his 45 points in the fourth quarter, Kwame Brown added a career playoff-high 19 points, and the Lakers beat the Suns 95-89 to cut Phoenix's lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

"It was effort," Bryant said after the Lakers won by scoring the game's last six points. "You can go over execution and X's and O's all you want. What you have to have is effort."

Brown, hampered by a sprained left ankle for nearly four months, scored eight more points than his combined total in the first two games.

"He played well from the beginning of the game," Bryant said. "He didn't get discouraged when he didn't finish plays."

Brown looked like he might be finished in this game when he rolled his right ankle with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. But not only did Brown stay in the game, he scored nine points during the remainder of the period.

"I was like 'Oh no, not again.' But it's OK," Brown said. "It's swelling up a little bit, but I'll be OK."

Game 4 will be played Sunday at Staples Center, with the fifth game Wednesday night in Phoenix, where the Suns embarrassed the Lakers 126-98 in Game 2.

Bryant scored only 15 points in that game after getting 39 in the opener, although he shot 1-of-10 in the final period of a 95-87 loss. He was much better in the fourth quarter of this game, shooting 5-of-11 to finish 15-of-26, and added four foul shots in as many attempts.

The odds remain against the Lakers, since only 11 of 193 teams in NBA history have come back from an 0-2 deficit to win a best-of-seven series. But an NBA team has never won a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games, so this was a victory they had to have.

"We still have the pressure on us," Brown said.

Bryant added six rebounds and six assists, and Lamar Odom had 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers.

Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Leandro Barbosa scored 20 points, Steve Nash had 10 points and 13 assists and Shawn Marion also scored 10 points for Phoenix.

The Lakers won the game at the foul line, shooting 22-of-28 to Phoenix's 8-of-12. Los Angeles outrebounded the Suns 44-35.

"You've got to give them credit," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Things were so easy at the beginning. Human nature took over. Kobe down the stretch was too much to handle. They got 19 offensive rebounds - that was the game."

A 3-pointer by Bryant and a basket by Odom gave the Lakers an 83-75 lead with 9:55 to play. The Suns drew within three points before failing to score on three straight possessions. Bryant then drove for a layup with 3:29 to play, making it 89-84.

Two free throws by Stoudemire and a 3-pointer by Barbosa tied the game at 89 with 2:03 left, but the Suns wouldn't score again.

Odom's basket with 1:45 remaining put the Lakers ahead for good, and Bryant added a tough turnaround jumper from the left baseline with 57 seconds to go. He made a pair of foul shots with 20 seconds left to clinch the victory.

"I thought they played harder than we did," Nash said. "And we didn't stick to our game plan like we did in the first two games. We were a step slow and we weren't in the right spots. Defensively, we need to concentrate and be in the right spots."

Stoudemire said he believes the Suns let the game slip away, in part due to their 15 turnovers.

"We had a chance to put them away," he said. "They shot the ball well, Kobe was on fire. Game 4 will be a different story. We normally take care of the ball, but they were the aggressor."

The Suns made their first five shots - all jumpers - for a quick 11-0 lead, prompting a timeout from the Lakers and boos from the Staples Center crowd of 18,997.

Stoudemire picked up two fouls in the first 4 1/2 minutes, but the Suns kept hitting from outside, and led 31-14 late in the first quarter. Phoenix was 13-of-16 at that stage including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

The Lakers battled back, and trailed by only three points at halftime.

He made $1.8 billion in 2 days

What a couple of days for shareholders of Amazon.com. And what a couple of days for company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. It was like the 1990s again.

Amazon shares soared nearly 27% Wednesday, from $44.75 to $56.81, after the company reported that first-quarter profits doubled from a year ago.

The shares jumped an additional 10.5% on Thursday, to $62.78, and were up a little more in after-hours trading.

The total gain for Amazon.com over the two days: 40.3%.

The past two days' gains boosted the company's market capitalization -- the value of all the shares trading in the public domain -- from $18.3 billion to $25.7 billion, a gain of about $7.4 billion.

For Bezos, who started Amazon.com in 1994, that meant the value of his 101.3 million shares in the company jumped in value from $4.53 billion to $6.36 billion, a gain of roughly $1.8 billion.

Wednesday's gain was its fourth-largest one-day percentage gain. The two-day percentage gain was the third-largest in the company's history. The larger two-day gains:

A 43.4% gain between April 9 and April 10, 2001, when the stock closed at $12.01.

A 42% gain between Nov. 22 and Nov. 23, 1998, when the stock closed at $36.33.

His is a volatile stock
Bezos may be the first to say, "So what?" His net worth has been all over the place from $10.1 billion in 1999, according to Forbes, to $1.5 billion in 2002. Last year, Forbes said he was worth $4.3 billion.

Amazon's closing price on Nov. 23, 1998, after that 42% gain, was $36.33, adjusted for splits.

The stock peaked a year later -- on Dec. 10, 1999 -- at $106.69. Then, the stock lost 94% of its value over roughly the next 22 months before bottoming at $5.97 on Sept. 28, 2001. Since then, the stock is up 951%.

Over its first seven years as a publicly traded company, Amazon.com lost nearly $3 billion on total revenue of $12.2 billion.

In the last three years, its profits have totaled nearly $924 million on total revenue of $20.7 billion.

8 Candidates Gather For 1st Tussle On TV; A Chance To Distinguish Themselves

For presidential hopefuls, it's called the Expectations Game.

Here's how it's played: Before a debate, rival campaigns build up the skills of their opponents while downgrading their own candidate's verbal abilities. That way, any bright moments make a performance seem like a home run.

For the Democratic hopefuls, the first major round of the Expectations Game came ahead of Thursday night's debate at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C.
The 90-minute event — the earliest presidential debate ever — offers eight candidates their initial chance to distinguish themselves on the long road to the nomination next year.

"I've just got to make sure I don't trip walking on the stage," joked Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, who complained that the candidates get no opening or closing statements and that responses to questions are limited to 60 seconds.

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama cracked, "It takes me 60 seconds to clear my throat."

Such self-deprecating comments before a debate are common in the Expectations Game. So is anonymous praise.

One of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's rivals tried to set high stakes for her performance by sharing with a reporter a 1990 editorial in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Clinton, as first lady of Arkansas, once turned a news conference staged by her husband's Republican challenger into an impromptu debate. "The tougher Clinton" went on to "mop the marble floor with her husband's opponent," the newspaper contended.

In a similar bit of gamesmanship, an Obama opponent tried to raise the bar for the Illinois senator by pointing out to a reporter that he had been editor of the Harvard Law Review and rose to prominence on the strength of his rhetorical skills. The campaign cited a letter to the editor in The Seattle Times last February that claimed Abraham Lincoln would have lost his election if he had to debate Obama instead of Stephen Douglas.

Earthlike Look Alike

On Tuesday, astronomers announced the discovery of Gliese 581 C, an "Earthlike" planet 20 light-years outside our solar system. The New York Times, among othOn Tuesday, astronomers announced the discovery of Gliese 581 C, an "Earthlike" planet 20 light-years outside our solar system. The New York Times, among other news organizations, repeated the word Earthlike in headlines. What does it mean to say that a planet is "Earthlike"?

It's small, rocky, not too hot, not too cold, and it might be able to support life. In general, an Earthlike planet should be no more than 10 times as massive as the Earth, but big enough that its atmosphere doesn't drift off. (The newly discovered planet is roughly five Earth masses.) For comparison, Jupiter is 100 times Earth's mass. The planet also needs to have a rocky core. Big balls of gas like Jupiter aren't likely to be conducive to living organisms. But most importantly, to be capable of supporting life a planet must have a surface temperature that can sustain water in liquid form. (We can't know for sure, but it's safe to assume that alien life-forms would need water to survive.)

A planet's temperature is determined by a planet's distance from the star around which it orbits: It should be close enough that water doesn't freeze, but far enough away that it doesn't boil off. (The star in question, Gliese 581, is dim compared to our sun, but the planet orbits close enough to it that water can probably maintain liquid form.) Planets such as Neptune, a giant ball of ice and rock surrounded by a thick envelope of gas, could never support life, since so little heat penetrates its atmosphere. In the case of Gliese 581 C, scientists have a good idea of the planet's temperature and mass but can only speculate about its composition.

In Basketball Today........

Jason Terry scored 28 points, Dirk Nowitzki had 23 and Josh Howard led a 15-2 run in the third quarter that sent the Mavericks to a 112-99 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, evening their first-round series.

Dallas had lost six straight to Golden State dating to last season. The Mavericks' search for a skid-buster included a new, smaller starting lineup in Game 1, but that only resulted in a 12-point loss.

So coach Avery Johnson went back to the formula that won 67 games in the regular season and saw his club back in synch from the start. The center tandem of Erick Dampier and DeSagana Diop proved they can hold their own against Golden State's little guys, and sixth man Jerry Stackhouse bounced back from a scoreless opener to put up 17 points.

"Everybody talked about the Xs and Os and the decision Avery made to go smaller, but it really wasn't that," Stackhouse said. "It was just the fact we didn't compete. I thought we came out and really competed tonight for 48 minutes and the game went in our favor."

Then again, it was easier with the Warriors' two best players getting ejected.

Baron Davis was tossed with 0.2 seconds left in the third quarter and Stephen Jackson was lost with 4:34 left in the game. Golden State already was trailing when the technical fouls started piling up.

"We're not good enough to lose a player to an ejection, much less two," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "It hurt us when we lost Baron. I thought we had a shot at the time. It wasn't to be."

The series shifts to Oakland for Game 3 on Friday night, and there's little doubt the emotions will remain high.

The Warriors certainly won't be unhinged by this loss, just their second in the last 12 games. Nelson won't allow it. He's kept his club loose, telling everyone they were lucky to win the opener and that there was a better chance of him being hit by lightning than of his team winning Game 2. His task now will be harnessing Jackson and Davis' emotions.

Johnson expected Dallas to bounce back strong. The Mavericks have lost consecutive games only once since starting the season 0-4, and last year they recovered from two Game 1 losses to win Game 2 both times. They went on to win both series, too.

Still, this victory was a bit of a relief to the Mavs because it ended a five-game postseason losing streak that started in last year's NBA finals and it should quiet talk of Nellie and the Warriors having their number.

"We needed to turn it up," said Howard, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds. "They were aggressive at the start of the last game and we didn't respond. This time, we turned it around."

Dallas was finishing off its game-changing stretch when things started getting out of control.

The bad blood started when Terry dribbled into Jackson, drawing a foul, then kept going into Davis. Words were exchanged and there was some shoving, but officials broke it up by giving those three players technical fouls.

Davis got another tech, and an automatic ejection, for arguing about a foul with 0.2 seconds left in the third quarter. He was smiling and clapping at the time, which he said was to keep his teammates' spirits up.

"I wasn't trying to show up the refs," he said. "I was trying to keep my emotions in check. Emotion is what got us to the playoffs. We have to channel that emotion into playing better defense."

The game was turning into a rout when Jackson got his second technical. Whatever he said to get tossed wasn't nearly as bad as his reaction afterward. He wouldn't stop screaming at officials as he headed to the locker room, with teammate Matt Barnes trying to cover Jackson's mouth with his arms, then with a towel.

Jackson, who declined to comment, led the Warriors with 30 points, his most ever in a playoff game. He also had eight turnovers. Davis had 13 points, two assists and one rebound; he had 33 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists in Golden State's victory in the opener.

"I feel we're in good position," Davis said. "They're supposed to beat us by 20. There's no pressure on us. Tonight we were just out of fire."

Golden State opened the game strong, going on an 11-0 run in the opening minutes. The Warriors were up 23-16 soon after, but all their points had come from Jackson and Monta Ellis. That duo was a combined 9-of-10; everyone else was 0-for-8.

Ellis had 13 points in the first quarter but didn't score again until the final minute of the third quarter. He finished with 20 points. Jason Richardson had 14 with 10 rebounds.

Howard filled his stat sheet with five steals and two blocks. Nowitzki was 7-of-15 with seven rebounds.

"It was a physical game and emotional," Nowitzki said. "I think they got us in the first game and took us out of our game. I said after Game 1 we need to execute a lot better. We made a couple of adjustments that worked. Now they'll make adjustments going home and we'll go from there."

House Panel Approves Subpoena for Rice

In rapid succession, congressional committees Wednesday ramped up their investigations of the Bush administration by approving a subpoena for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and granting immunity to a key aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

By 21-10, the House oversight committee voted to issue a subpoena to Rice to compel her story on the Bush administration's claim, now discredited, that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa.

Moments earlier in the committee chamber next door, the House Judiciary Committee voted 32-6 to grant immunity to Monica Goodling, Gonzales' White House liaison, for her testimony on why the administration fired eight federal prosecutors. The panel also unanimously approved — but did not issue — a subpoena to compel her to appear.
